Sean Hoelscher & Ryan Duke
Calallen High School, Robstown, TX
Coach Steve Chapman is blessed with two young arms in his starting rotation. Sean Hoelscher and Ryan Duke are only sophomores and have been consistent all year.
They have contributed to the success of the team. Helping in all facets, pitching, defense and at the plate. Chapman is quoted as saying.
Ryan, who is having a little bit of a better year, is 8-1 in 61.2 innings. He has given up 45 hits, 13 runs with only 12 earned. He has 92 strikeouts with 29 walks and an ERA of 1.36. Duke is a powerful force from the mound and proved with 16 strikeouts against Alice during the regular season.
Not only can this kid deal from the rubber, he is a great defensive shortstop, and is also an influential member of the team when he is at bat. Hitting .347 in 95 at bats, scoring 17 runs, Ryan has helped the Calallen team earn its 31-4 record in season play. Ryan also has 33 hits, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 29 RBIs, and 12 walks.
Hoelscher, who has been the most consistent, has a 7-0 record in 37.2 innings. He has given up only 24 hits, 20 runs with 11 earned. Sean has an ERA of 2.04, with 46 strikeouts and 14 walks. His most dominant performance was against Flower Bluff when he threw a one-hitter.
Playing left field when not on the hill, Hoelscher is batting .389 in 54 at bats and has scored 20 runs. Other stats are his 21 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triples, and a home run, with 15 RBIs and 7 walks.
Coach Chapman also reported that, " These two young players are outstanding. We are lucky to have them for another two years."
With these two commanding young players, Calallen High has a good shot at winning the state Championship.
